The "I'm Starting School" program is based in the tiny seaside town of Hastings, on Western Port Bay, Victoria. For five years now, every child starting at one of our three local schools is gifted an I'm Starting School pack, to help with their transition into primary school life. The teachers give out the packs during kinder to school transition, explaining the great ways the activities can help prepare children to begin formal learning next year. You've heard the old expression "It takes a village to raise a child"? Well, that's how we do it here in Hastings. The Rotary Club of Hastings Western Port have been generously helping to fund the packs from the beginning of the project. Packs are also sponsored by individual shopkeepers and the chamber of commerce - this enables the inclusion of Milo's Birthday Surprise into each pack - the three schools now use this book as the basis for their phonics program in preps. Other sponsors include our local Westpac Bank and the Ties For Lives Foundation. Even our local dentist contributes with toothbrushes and toothpaste! It's amazing the difference we can make when we work together!
